E-bullies. You fucking e-bullies.
I was lurking in chats a few minutes ago and I'm just hanging out, doing my thing, watching the yellow, blue and white scroll by, mostly non-sensical harmless stuff. A usual day in chats.
Suddenly, from out of the blue, some n00b goes and inadvertently offends one of the regulars.---
I feel at this point I should define those terms as how I see them.
n00b: A person new to both the game and the chat interface, generally unaware of who is who and what does what in both the chat and the game itself.
regular: A person who has knowledge of the who's who social stuff around the game and chat and is generally known by the other regulars in the chat.
---
Anyway, some n00b goes and inadvertently offends one of the regulars in some small way. Whatever. It's a simple misunderstanding 90% of the time. And it would be easy to solve those situations with both tact and diplomacy, thereby letting everyone go away happy.
(in the time I was writing this, they're at it again)
Or more often, the n00b doesn't say anything directly to them. They may be RP'ing with a friend or another new person in the chat, and the e-bullies might tear into them because it isn't quite up to their standards or whatever excuse they give to pounce.
Let me elaborate on the cycle I see happening, and for simplicity, I'll use point form for one sort of scenario I see happening way too often.
- n00b enters the chat
- n00b tries to awkwardly RP (not in a bad sense, but...you know, they have a prepared entrance they paste and post, or they do something cliche or look very typically generic, etc.)
- e-bullying regular makes a rude and unwarranted comment
- n00b is justifiably insulted and mouths off
- e-bullying regular and company all join in on it, tearing every little thing the n00b says apart until that person leaves. Sometimes there is even a zeroing involved.
- rinse, repeat
Emphasis on the "rinse, repeat" bit, because, you guessed it, at the time of this writing, yet ANOTHER n00b is getting berated by the big bad regulars.
Here's my question, that I really don't need answered due to its rhetorical nature, but...
What kind of sad little person needs to sit in front of their computer all day, getting off on making other people miserable with their friends? Is it the same kind of person who was tormented and bullied in their school to the point where they think that is how you have to act to be a "cool" person? Is that the kind of person who merely enjoys being a completely rude and ostentatious ogre to people who, instead of being shouted down by the cries of the almighty e-bully and their friends, would benefit more from positive, constructive help from such experienced people?
Such help isn't affordable. Clearly, getting together with your friends in a chat room so you can gang bash n00bs together for any little thing that doesn't quite meet your standards is much more important. Hell, all that lamenting that there isn't anyone new and interesting in the city is so important to do, we may as well chase everyone away that could eventually become a strong member of the RP community we have here. That is obviously a better idea than, you know, helping them out or god forbid, offering advice and positive constructive criticism.
...
You e-bullies know exactly who you are. You are sad, two-dimensional little people. Look at yourselves. This is your life, and it is ending one misery-spreading minute at a time. You need to give your heads a shake and think about exactly what you are doing with your life. Treating people like garbage? Strutting about like you have some sort of right to be admired?
I don't expect a change in anything. Nothing ever changes. Not here, not anywhere.
Right about here, I would wish some sort of horrible fate upon the e-bullies. But...I figure... they're them. That is punishment enough.
