Jocelyn couldn't imagine for the life of her why Janus had asked her to meet him here. He had left her a note in the bed, tucked underneath his pillow. When she had reached over to drape her arm around him, she grasped only air and let out a little mumble of protest. He had disappeared again. When she sat up, she noticed the note and read his writing. His penmanship was a curious thing. He wrote in large block letters with the accuracy of a child still learning to print. It was endearing. It was very much like her husband.
The note was tucked into her purse and she looked at it with a little smirk on her full, soft lips. It had cutely suggested to her that she ought to get ready for a night on the town and meet him at a fairly popular club in the downtown of the city. She had selected quite a little number in which to dress, and here she stood with her back to the bar. Jocelyn had admired herself for only a moment in the mirror, hoping Janus would find her pleasing to his eye. Judging by the awed stares of the men in the room and after battling off their social advances, she guessed that the full-length, bare-backed white dress and the matching heels would be to his liking. She had matched gleaming gold jewelry encrusted with sapphires and stood out in the club, completely overdressed for the place but feeling quite comfortable with the dress hugging her shape, showing off her cleavage.
The crowd cheered erratically and the lone singer on the stage waved discontently as she left, blushing brightly. The DJ urged more lauding from the crowd, but to no avail. Jocelyn raised an eyebrow and smirked again.
"Tough crowd," she muttered quietly, once again wondering why Janus had asked her to meet him in a karaoke bar. In fact, where the hell was h-
Jocelyn's thoughts cut off abruptly as the next singer climbed onto the stage, and when he turned around to grasp the microphone from the DJ, those mismatched eyes seemed to cut clear across the hazy bar and meet her own. With an open, shocked expression, Jocelyn heard the opening jazzy notes to an old song, and her husband began to sing incredibly well.
"Some day...when I'm awfully low...
And the world is cold...
I will feel a glow just thinking oooffffffffff you
and the way you look...tonight."
For a few moments, as he moved through the crowd with his ever-seeing gaze fixed on hers, she felt as if she was dreaming. Her hand moved to her arm and she pinched herself, hard. She was here, she was awake, she had a completely insane husband, and she loved him for it. Was he actually dancing through the crowd like some sort of Vegas lounge singer, singing a Frank Sinatra song to her?
Yes, yes he was. He had set this up, too, the sonofabitch. There was a spotlight from the stage lighting her up, and for a brief second, she wished she didn't wear white. The stage beam was making her dress glow like a beacon, and she clasped her hands in front of her as the entirety of the bar turned to see who this man was singing to. A fierce blush lit her face beautifully, and she smiled at her husband who was dancing and singing towards her.
"Yes, you're looooovely...with your smile so warm
And your cheeks so soft
There is nothing for me but to lovvvvve you
and the way you look...tonight."
Jocelyn's heart leapt as he approached, noticing how splendid he looked, dressed in a charcoal grey three piece suit, his usually long and messy hair actually combed and styled, pushed back like a mane over his shoulders. His movements as he weaved through the crowd were as melodic as his voice, and she couldn't help but be surprised yet again. It seemed as though every day she discovered something completely new about her husband, and she let out a nervous laugh as he approached her. He rested his hand on her hips, and immediately, she felt herself moving into a dance with him.
"With each word, your tenderness grows
tearing my fear....apaaaaart
And that laugh that wrinkles your nose,
touches my... foolish heaaart."
He was crazy! It took one look into those vivid, mismatched eyes of his to confirm it, but she loved him ever more. His kind of crazy got right into her, right inside of her and she wouldn't have it any other way. She let him lead her through a dance amidst the crowd, dimly aware that their performance had shocked them into silence and she didn't care as the sound of the trumpets in the music blared. He sang still, into the microphone, his voice clear and proud over the speakers, right next to her. His hand pressed gently at the bare skin of her lower back, and she felt chills running up and down her body. She turned and pressed her back to him, moving her hips sensually against him, his hand resting on her midsection.
"Lovely...never, ever change,
Keep that breathless charm..
Won't you please arrange it?
Because I looovvvveeee you, and the way you look...tonight."
She swung around the floor with him, the spotlight following them as they moved with a grace she never thought him capable of. Again, she wondered how long it had taken for him to set this up. It didn't matter to her. The music played and she danced with her husband, their eyes focused only on each other. Janus slipped away from her and did a perfect little spin, suddenly dropping to his knee at the end of the song as the tempo slowed, singing out the last line, the notes fading away slowly.
"Mm....just the way....you look....tooonight..."
The crowd cheered loudly, raising their glasses and applauding. The women cheered and the men whistled loudly, the DJ lauding them from the stage. Neither of them noticed. Jocelyn went to her husband, clapping and laughing. He allowed her to pull him to his feet and he held her in his arms, her own slinging around his neck, pulling him down into a lingering, passioned kiss. She moved her lips to his ear, whispering quietly amidst the noise as his hands tightened on her waist.
"Mm...you are SO getting laid tonight, Janus. Just so you know," she said, pressing herself against him as he laughed with her amidst the cheers and the lights.
